Obituary for William "Bill" Joseph Clayton

Mr. William "Bill" Joseph Clayton, 73, of Sardis, MS passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019, at his home.

Mr. Clayton was born on October 2, 1945 in Memphis, TN to Ouida Grace Clayton and Hugh Clarence Clayton.
He was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church and a member of the Mississippi Bar Association. He was a proud member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a graduate of The University of Mississippi School of Law. He was later elected to serve as Panola County’s prosecuting attorney He was multi-talented and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and loved dogs. As a pilot, he enjoyed flying and in his spare time, he loved to read, make jewelry, gunsmith, and photographer. Mr. Clayton also enjoyed woodworking and is remembered as a history buff. He was a member of the DeSoto Gun Club, the NRA, the Confederate Air Force, and the Panola County Airport Board.

To cherish his memory, he leaves behind his loving family which includes his wife, Genell Mattox Clayton of Sardis, MS; two daughters, Carrie Clayton Carullo (Matt) of Oakton, VA and Cati Clayton Frey (Larson) of Madison, MS; one son, Don Clayton of Batesville, MS; one step-daughter, Brooke Anthony Savell (Shay) of Brandon, MS; one step-son, Allen C. Anthony, II (Tina) of Hernando, MS; and ten grandchildren. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Clayton's life will be celebrated with services being held on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 2 pm in the Sardis Chapel of Ray-Nowell Funeral Home with Bro. Hal Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with Dennis Darby, Gaines Baker, Rusty Barnes, Chris Mattox, Travis Ferguson, Ken Kairit, Charlie Carter and Dr. L.G. Evans serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held on Thursday in the funeral home from 12 pm - 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
